About the place
The Bridges of Preobrazhensky are two bridges built between 1949 and 1952 across the channels of the New and Old Dnipro rivers. They connected two banks of the city and the Khortytsia Island. The project was developed by engineer Borys Preobrazhensky.
Between 1932 and 1941, two bridges were built across the New and Old Dnipro rivers according to the project of Professor I. Alexandrov. High-strength silicon steel was used for construction. However, in 1941, during the retreat of the Soviet army, the bridges were blown up.
The new bridges were planned to be built of reinforced concrete since high-strength steel was insufficient. Many innovations were applied during the construction, such as layer-by-layer concrete casting, block reinforcement of concrete, and block formwork. At that time, the world's practice did not yet know reinforced concrete bridges with such spans.
The bridge across the New Dnipro had four arches, a two-level structure, a total length of 560 meters, and a height of 54 meters. The lower level was intended for cars and pedestrians, while the upper level was for the railway. The bridge across the Old Dnipro was the largest single-arch reinforced concrete bridge in Ukraine, with a length of 228 meters. The bridge decks were designed for loads from both the railway and vehicles.
The bridges were put into operation in December 1952 and were named after their architect.
