The monument was opened on the eve of the 60th anniversary of Victory over Nazism in World War II on May 8, 2005. The sculptors were F. Zaytsev and B. Chak.
The monument itself is an 11-meter granite obelisk in the shape of a bayonet, crowned with a figure of an angel made of forged copper. At a height of 8.5 meters, a forged copper Victory Order is attached to the obelisk.
The total losses of Ukrainian civilians during the Nazi occupation are estimated at around seven million people, of which about one million were killed by the Nazis. Many peaceful residents became victims of cruel treatment and forced labor. Among the eleven million Soviet military personnel, about a quarter were ethnic Ukrainians.
