Topologies of the Fragment: beauty and the wisdom of Japanese kintsugi. Lecture by Robert Campbell, an American specialist in Japanese literature and culture, Japanologist, and cultural commentator.

The technique of kintsugi involves the repairing of ceramics by gluing shards from one broken vessel together with urushi lacquer as an adhesive, then finishing the repair by dusting gold powder over the lacquer-joined cracks.

💭 «In my lecture, I will introduce several examples of kintsugi and other forms of restoration from Japanese history, and explore some newer uses of the technique in the context of natural disasters. Recovery and reintegration are important topics in modern Japan, as they are no doubt here in Ukraine during the years of full-scale invasion. My hope is that we may be able to discuss and attempt a re-imagination of the physical, geographical, and perhaps psychological topologies of strife and trauma through new (yet old) historical lenses.»
