After Russia destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in 2023, the receding waters revealed the territories of the Velykyi Luh , which had remained submerged for decades. Along with them emerged hundreds of unique archaeological and historical sites — the remains of settlements, burial grounds, vessels, and traces of different periods in the history of our region.
At the same time, these territories remain under constant threat from Russian attacks. That is why it is crucial to document, study, and preserve this cultural heritage for future generations while there is still time.
This is the goal of a new international partnership launched in Stockholm. Its mission is to unite international efforts to research and preserve the Velykyi Luh — the historical heart of the Zaporizhzhia region.
The partnership brings together the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration @zoda.gov.ua, the Zaporizhzhia City Council @zaporizhzhia_city_council, the National Reserve Khortytsia @n.z.hortica, Zaporizhzhia National University @official_znu, the Swedish National Maritime, Transport and Military Museums, and the International Congress of Maritime Museums.
This collaboration paves the way for the creation of the International Center for the Research and Preservation of the Velykyi Luh— a place where Ukrainian and international researchers, archaeologists, and museum professionals will work together to study, document, and safeguard our shared cultural heritage.
The location of the signing ceremony carried special symbolism. It took place at the Swedish National Maritime Museum, beside the stern of Amphion, the flagship of King Gustav III, which became a symbol of Sweden’s victory over the Russian Empire at the end of the 18th century.
Today, Ukraine and Sweden are united not only by solidarity in times of war. We are connected by a shared European history, respect for cultural heritage, and a common commitment to preserving it for future generations. 🇺🇦🇸🇪
This partnership is about more than protecting monuments. It is about trust and a shared responsibility for a history that forms part of Europe’s common heritage.
While Russia seeks to erase our cultural memory, Ukraine, together with its international partners, is working to preserve it. 💪🏻
