🥁 Zaporizhzhia Tulumbases Added to Ukraine's National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage
The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has added the "Tradition of Crafting and Playing the Zaporizhzhia Tulumbases" to the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Tulumbases are large, cauldron-shaped Cossack drums with a metal or wooden body and a natural membrane. The tradition of crafting and playing the Zaporizhzhia tulumbases combines performing arts, traditional music, craftsmanship, the oral transmission of knowledge, and military ceremonial practices. It includes selecting materials, working with wood and metal, making drumheads and beaters, decorating, repairing, and maintaining the instruments.
Playing the tulumbas involves rhythmic patterns, various striking techniques, ensemble performance, and public presentations.
