July 16, 1990 marked the day when Ukraine first declared its aspiration for independence with a clear and confident voice.
On this day, the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of Ukraine—a document that became one of the first and most important steps toward restoring our nation's independence.
The Declaration affirmed Ukraine's right to determine its own future: to pursue its own policies, manage its natural resources, protect its territory, and defend the interests of its people.
Just one year later, its key principles became the foundation of the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine, and were later reflected in the Constitution.
It was the determination of conscious Ukrainians that set the course our country continues to follow today—a path of freedom and the right to shape our own future.
Many years have passed, but the meaning of that decision remains unchanged. Every day, Ukrainians prove that independence is a value worth defending. It is our choice, our responsibility, and something we are truly proud of.
Today, we honor those who shaped these defining chapters of our history and continue to safeguard our right to live in a free and independent Ukraine.
