This mural depicts Nestor Makhno, a legendary figure not only in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine, but also in the history of the global anarchist movement.
The Makhnovists were peasants who chose to fight for a free life and to farm their own land without masters or oppression. In 1921, this people's army fought simultaneously under the black anarchist flag, following the ideas of their commander, and the blue and yellow flag of independent Ukraine.
Today, the figure of Nestor Makhno inspires people to join the struggle against imperialism in order to end Russia's war of aggression and gain freedom.
The mural was created by contemporary Ukrainian artists: Mykyta Kravtsov, David Chychkan, and Kateryna Pikarska. The project was implemented by BIRUCHIY contemporary art project, the Association of Contemporary Art Researchers, and Cultprojector.
