Address
Sobornyi Avenue at the turn on the street Shkilʹnа, Zaporizhzhia
The monument was opened on April 26, 2018, on the 32nd anniversary of the tragedy at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
16,803 residents of Zaporizhzhia participated in the cleanup of the consequences of the accident. This monument was erected in their honor. The sculptor of the monument was Ruben Oganesyan, and the architect was Vadym Petrenko. The location of the installation was chosen by the Chernobyl veterans themselves.
The memorial is erected on a circular site, which symbolizes the planetary scale of the disaster. On it, there is a sloping plate that represents the scorched earth. The 300-kilogram sphere is a peaceful atom that went out of control and was stopped on the sloping square. It appeared from the time portal-arch as a symbol of dividing life into before and after the accident. The bell on the memorial is an integral element of almost all monuments dedicated to the events of the disaster and its liquidators.
