From the history of Zaporizhzhia it is known that until 1921 the city was named Alexander after the Alexander Fortress, which was laid in 1770, in honour of General Field Marshal Oleksandr Golitsyn.

The legendary history is connected with this fortress.

Near the fortress lived a young man who was studying forge craft. The teacher said to the boy that he was inattentive, inaccurate, and restless.

The teacher explained that blacksmithing requires a lot of time and strength. The teacher told the boy that it was necessary to dirty his hands with ash near the crucible, to see the grunted metal, as the space around it illuminated, because there is magic in it, incomprehensible to the human mind.
It is necessary to work quickly and skillfully, because metal does not forgive mistakes.

Once the guy came out of the smith shop to rest, he saw a charming girl who was going to the fortress. The young man was watching until the girl went inside the fort.

Returning to the smith shop, Ivan, it was his name, put his hands to the work with inspiration. He retorted the iron flower and showed it to the teacher, and he finally praised the boy.

– Ivan, what happened to you? – asked the teacher.
– Who is that girl living in the fortress? – asked the boy.
– I see, – said the teacher, – I don’t know who she is, but you put life into your work.

Every day, Ivan looked for a girl, he even got courage to come to her and talk. It turned out that the girl came for a week and is going to her hometown tomorrow morning. Ivan presented his beloved iron flower and promised to come to her.
Ivan began to work more and more diligently, so that the teacher let him go to the girl. Seeing what iron works of art Ivan began to do, the teacher realized that if a boy went to another city, he would be taken away by other masters. The teacher did not want to lose such a master. He wanted his pupil to stay in the town, so he wrote a letter to Ivan, as if it was from a girl. In the letter teacher wrote that the boy didn’t go to her and generally forgot her.

It was painful for Ivan to read this letter, but he couldn’t do anything.

Remaining, Ivan lived in the studio, working day and night, forging iron flowers, which then scattered in the garden around the fortress and came there every day in the hope of seeing a charming girl.

Now there is a tradition: everyone who came to Zaporizhzhia should give a charming stranger a flower in memory of Ivan's everlasting love.
