The National Reserve "Khortytsia" is an unique memorial of nature, culture and history of Zaporizhzhia Cossacks. Khortytsya is the largest island not only on the Dnieper, but on all the rivers of Europe, 12 km long, 2.5 km wide. Its area is approximately 2,5 thousand hectares. According to scientists, it was created more than 2 million years ago as a result of a geological fault that split a piece of the Ukrainian crystal shield. On its territory all landscapes of Ukraine are connected: plains and meadows, real and petrophytic steppes, rocky granite detachment, beams, upland oak forests, hanging swamps, lakes. There are more than a thousand species of plants, as many species of insects, two hundred species of birds, and two dozen species of mammals. Today, the National Reserve "Khortytsia" is a powerful tourist center of the Zaporizhzhia region.
